Attributes of a leader - Charisma

Today the class were asked what does "Having charisma" or "Being charismatic" mean when we talk about a leader having charisma or being charismatic.
They have been set the challenge of finding out the answer and giving me an example of what it means.
I will post the answers tomorrow.

Hint - Sorya was partly right when she said has it got anything to do with the way you look....

Good luck!

Unpacking Shape of a Leader

Today we have been unpacking our unit of inquiry "Shape of a leader" and reflecting on ourselves in how we have been leaders in PE and at home.

Some very honest reflection as they start to decide on what attributes of a leader they each have. As one child said "It as hard being a leader in PE as not all my group listened to me, if they don't listen then they miss my ideas".
So true.

The children worked in small groups and looked at our central idea - "People have played a leading role in society which has resulted in change".

The children pulled the central idea apart. Some really good discussions at the key words, society and change. What does it mean by society and how can you show change?

Team Building in PE

This week the class has been put through their paces with Mr Ben in having to work as a team.

They were put into small groups and had to work as a collegial group to move around a course.

If they couldn't then they could not move.

Check out these great action pictures of the class working as different groups.

Guest Speaker - Ms Paula

Today the grade were really lucky to have Ms Paula the Elementary School Principal come and talk to the grade about "What is a leader".

She talked about the attributes she has a leader. She reminded the children that when she was a grade 4 child she was shy but this is not a reason to not persevere and to push yourself.

She said that as a leader you need to read, listen, talk and write. Things we do everyday at school and what we should all continue to do as we get older.

That leaders find the answers to questions, find out how they can make a change or a difference in peoples lives.

Ms Paula talked about why she got into teaching, that she wanted to make a difference in children's lives. We think she is.

As one child said, "Ms Paula is a great role model to us all" or "Wow, Ms Paula shy, would not have thought that"

Ms Paula said that leaders are also part of a team, a group of people that support each other, work together.

Elementary Student Council Reps

On Monday the Elementary Student Council meet to vote for their student president.

Two students from our class - Jade and Maddie both put their names forward for the Vice-president and spoke in front of the council - something which is not easy to do.

I was really proud of them both for being great risk takers, communicators and being open minded.
They spoke really well and can be proud of giving it a go. They both would make great presidents so hopefully next year they try out again.

Unfortunately their can only be one winner.
The vote was a close count with the following results

President - Fatima (G5)
Vice President - Vorleak (G4)

Secretaries - SeoYoung (G5) & Olivia (G4)

CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE FOR GIVING IT A GO.

G4 Angkor Wat Sign up

This week Mr Ben (PE) has sent out the following on Managebac to promote the Angkor Wat Siem Reap Run Bike trip. This is a great experience for the children and a very well run weekend away. I highly recommend it. Please read the information below and sign up now. If you have any questions please come in and see me or Mr Ben

Dear Parents,
I am writing to you to inform you about the Grade 4 and Grade 5 Angkor Wat Fun Run and Bike Race Trip.
The outline program for the trip is indicated below:
Friday 2 December - depart ISPP on hired bus, swimming at hotel in Siem Reap
Saturday 3 December - morning - 17km/37 km bike race; afternoon - trip to temples and swimming at hotel

Sunday 4 December - 3km fun run; hired bus back to ISPP, returning late afternoon
The trip will be lead by me and Andy Munn, and assisted by several other staff members, whom we are in the process of confirming.
At this stage, please carefully consider whether your child can commit to the training program and shows the maturity and behaviour standards required for residential trips. We will be setting up a training schedule that will run in the months leading up to the trip. This will involve lunchtime running activities at school on Fridays.
Students who are participating in the bike race will need to commit to three early morning Sunday rides. These students will need to have access to a roadworthy bike and a cycle helmet. The dates for these sessions are;
Sunday 18 September
Sunday 9 October
Sunday 6 November
We are in the process of negotiating access to a section of Hun Sen Boulevard, just to the south of ISPP, which is at present closed to traffic, for the students to cycle on. For these sessions students will meet at the ISPP carpark at 8am and will cycle for one hour. Parents are welcome to come and cycle with the students during these sessions.
The hotel where we will be staying, Empress Angkor, is located about 2km out of the town centre and has a swimming pool and outdoor space. Students will be staying in shared rooms (in a group of two or three), which have ensuite bathrooms. We will be travelling on buses with seat belts, that we will hire for the duration of the trip.
The trip should cost approximately $200 and will include accommodation, food and water, transport and entry fee for the 3km run. There will be an additional cost for the students who wish to participate in the bike race (approximately $65), which covers the entry fees to the bike race and transportation of bikes to Siem Reap. The exact amount will be confirmed once we have a clear idea of number of students participating. Please make a payment of $50 to the Finance Office, which acts as a non-returnable deposit before Wednesday 21st September. At the same time as you make this payment we ask that you please hand in a copy of your child’s passport.
Spending money for the trip is not necessary, but $20 is the maximum allowed and your child will be responsible for that money.
ISPP policy requires that each child has an up-to-date medical travel insurance for this trip. If you do not have insurance, the school can arrange for this to be purchased for the weekend (approx. $15).
There will be a parents information meeting on Friday 2 September at 7.35am, in the Multi Purpose Room MPR (ground floor of Secondary Building B, opposite the cafeteria) where we will distribute more detailed information and answer your questions. Information will also be posted on the Elementary PE Blog (www.isppelementarype.blogspot.com/p/angkor-wat-trip.html).

If you would like you child to participate in this trip, please complete the permission form If you are having trouble accessing the form the address is https://goo.gl/Vob6DA or email me for a copy. The permission form covers both the training sessions and the actual trip, and as such please can you complete it by Friday the 16th of September.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at school.
Yours sincerely,
Ben Wiggins (benwiggins@ispp.edu.kh)

Greetings in mother tongue

Greetings video. This week we decided to make a greetings video in the children's different languages as Mr Simon was getting frustrated when doing the morning roll call that children were not saying good morning in their native tongue.
Check it out.

Shape of a Leader Guest Speaker

On Friday we were lucky enough to have Man Choo the Secondary School Student Council President come and talk to the grade about "What is a leader" - "Becoming a Leader".

He talked to the children about the attributes he processes as a leader and what attributes he looks for in a leader.

He shared some good tips to the children and really pushed the fact that anyone can be a leader.

He reminded the children that when he was a grade 4 child seven years ago he was a shy child that would not even go and talk to the local shop keeper. That he pushed himself and now he is a confident G12.
