Wonderings and Noticings

Today we started our new unit of inquiry "Art Mirrors Life".

The children rotated around a selection of artworks and looked at each and were asked to write down what they "Noticed" and "Wondered" about each work.

We used this as our provocation - Tuning in stage.

First day school year

Today saw the start of the new school year at ISPP.

Teachers, children and parents were all a bit nervous as children were dropped to classes.

It was great to finally meet the new G4 class and they got stuck straight into their work. Some new faces joined the G4 team this year.

We know it will be another wonderful, fun and exciting year in the G4 classes.

Reading activities

Here are two videos of what we get up to during reading. The first is two reading groups explaining how we predict and summarise a story.

Checkout what Minato has been doing to increase his fluency in English and to get more confident in saying words with more volume. Well done Minato.

Electrical Circuits

This week we explored making electrical circuits.

Each group had to make a circuit that enabled them to power and turn on a light.

Afterwards they had to explain how it worked. They were given some key words to help them. Some great exploration.

The next day they used what they had done as well as listening to BrainPop and started to write an explanation text on how a electrical circuit works.

Potential & Kinetic Energy

Today the class did a very basic experiment using rubber bands to show their understanding of Kinetic & Potential Energy.

They got to shoot rubber bands.

They discovered that Potential Energy  is the energy that is stored in an object due to its position relative to some zero position. An object possesses gravitational potential energy if it is positioned at a height above (or below) the zero height.

Kinetic Energy - Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. An object that has motion - whether it is vertical or horizontal motion - has kinetic energy.

Afterwards they experimented in shooting rubber bands. It was incredible how many children have not every played or shot a rubber-band without actually hurting themselves.

It was very funny.

After the discovering what kinetic and potential energy was they looked at our lines of inquiry and in pairs broke it down. They also did their first thinking on what they think "Energy Is?"

UOI - Energy

This week we continue to unpack our new unit of inquiry about how energy exists in different forms and is used in our everyday life.

Today we looked at the different forms of energy - kinetic, potential, geothermal, heat, sound, light, electrical, nuclear, renewable and non-renewable as some of the forms of energy.

The class had to match cut out headings to a picture and definition.
They had to work with a partner and agree on the correct definition for that heading and make sure the illustration matched.

It really got them thinking.

We also looked at Brainpop and created notes on what are the different sources of energy.
