Welcome Letter

Dear Parents,
My name is Simon Templeton and I will be your child’s homeroom teacher for 2017-2018 school year. I  wanted to take this time to introduce myself and to share a little information about myself and our class.

My family and I have been in Cambodia for 2 years now moving from New Zealand. My wife, Karyn will also be teaching at ISPP teaching in Grade 2.

This is my first overseas teaching experience and I am excited to be teaching here at ISPP.  I have been teaching for 15 years. In New Zealand I was the Associate Principal and Grade 4 / 5 class teacher in an elementary school in a town called Whakatane.

I am a avid All Black rugby and Chiefs supporter and love all sports in general.

I have two girls that will also be attending ISPP this year. Riley 14, who will be in Grade 9 and Kate 13, will be in Grade 7.

Here are some classroom details that may be helpful to you that I will be discussing with my students this week.

Homework
Each Monday, students will be assigned homework. Most weeks the tasks will include Reading, Writing, Unit of Inquiry and basic facts. This homework supports what is being worked on in the classroom. It is due on Friday unless otherwise stated. If for a valid reason the homework cannot be completed please let me know by email. I can then make adjustments according to your child’s needs. Please remember that your child should be working on homework for about 20-30 minutes each night. I appreciate that a lot of children are involved in after school activities. Please support them by ensuring that they do a bit each night.

Communication
You are encouraged to visit this as often as you would like. The aim is for you, as parents, to have access to information about your child’s weekly learning experiences no matter where you are each week.  The children will each have their own personal blog that we will setting up. This will become their online portfolio. They will regularly be updating these.
As a team we usually communicate electronically with parents and students. All students will be given their own ISPP Gmail account and password that they can use for communication within the ISPP network. Please let me know if for any reason you change your email account. I am happy for you or your child to e-mail me with any questions as they arise.

If you need to speak to me about something important it is always best to make an appointment for a meeting, just drop me an e-mail and we can arrange a suitable time.
My e-mail address is:    simontempleton@ispp.edu.kh

Reading
Students are encouraged to read everyday for about 15-20 minutes. Please can you encourage your child to read a book of their choice each night. It is great if they can select books on different genres. The more interested they are about a theme or topic the more they will read. They do not always have to read books. Magazines, newspaper articles, e-readers and also the internet are great sources of information. Please remind your child to bring their library books back so that they can be exchanged each week. We will visit the library once a week on a Tuesday 2-2.30pm.

Drop off in morning
Please remember that your child should be at school by 7:20am, to be ready for the register being taken at 7:25am. On that note, please do not bring your child to school before 7:10am as there will not be any supervision for them.

Pick up end of day
The G4 children can be picked up at the end of the day out side the Admin building by the car park. Exceptions are if your child is on the school bus, or have an after school activity or go to secondary drop off to be picked up by a secondary sibling.

Swimming & PE
Please make sure that your child has appropriate clothing for Swimming  (e.g. swimmers, towel, goggles) and for PE (e.g. trainers & PE uniform).
PE- Tuesday 7.30 - 8.15 & Thursday 8.15 - 9am
Swimming - Friday 11 - 11.45

Sunscreen & hat
Please can you ensure your child applies sunscreen each day prior to coming to school and to have some in their bag to reapply throughout the day. Children must also wear a hat when outside of the classroom. They are encouraged to leave their ISPP hats in class at the end of the day.

Snack and Lunch
Your child will need to have a snack each day (fruit), as there are no snacks available to purchase at school. Lunch is available to purchase each day thru epicure. Please refer to the information sent from the school in this regard. You can also choose to bring your child’s lunch to school each day. Please remember that the lunch time has changed to 11:45am, so please make sure your child’s lunch is delivered to school by 11.30am and placed in the appropriate class basket each day.

Bells
07:25 - to signal that all students must go to homeroom
09:00 - start of morning recess
09:30 - end of morning recess
11:45 - start of lunch-time
12:30 - end of lunch-time
14:30 - end of school day

Birthday Celebrations
As a team we have decided that if you wish to bring a cake to class we ask that you speak to your teacher first. Cakes can be brought into class 10 minutes prior to lunch or as arranged by class teacher. Please no drinks, lollies or gift packs.

I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year to further their education by encouraging them to be an independent learner and engaging them in positive learning experiences. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to email me or make an appointment for us to meet and discuss.

Kind Regards,

Simon Templeton
